We bet on touch and on mobility in a big way, and included a fresh take on what a touch-based interface could be for customers. We believe deeply in this direction and the future will continue to build on Windows 8. Report: Ford Planning To Replace Windows From Its Sync In-Car Technology To Blackberry’s QNX

car platform based on Windows Embedded. Following Ford, many other automotive companies like Kia and others. Today, Bloomberg reported that Ford is planning to switch from Windows to Blackberry’s QNX OS for their next-generation Sync system. Ford is expecting that this QNX based SYNC system will be less expensive than licensing Microsoft technology and will improve the flexibility and speed of the next Sync system. Ford has more than 7 million vehicles on the road with Sync using Microsoft’s platform to make mobile phone calls and play music. The consumer satisfaction survey has revealed that Ford’s customers are not happy with progress with their touch screen technologies over the last few years. While Bloomberg is trying to portray that the problem with Microsoft’s platform is the reason for the downfall of SYNC platform, the actual reason is something different. A former SYNC engineer revealed the following, It’s good that Ford is ditching Sync… but what killed Sync was Ford not Microsoft.  Sync is a forked version of Windows CE that is maintained by…

New Report Claims Possible Surface Mini Announcement From Microsoft In June

Everyone was expecting Microsoft to announce a 8-inch version of Surface Mini before Microsoft announced 2nd gen Surface devices. There were some reports claiming that Microsoft is planning to launch Surface Mini sometime in April 2014. Today, Digitimes reported that Microsoft might announce its 8-inch Windows RT device in June during Computex event in Taiwan. Microsoft is expected to unveil an array of new mobile devices with display sizes below 8.5-inch running on an integrated OS derived from Windows RT and Windows Phone in June, according to makers in Taiwan’s supply chain. The software vendor is expected to release the new devices at Computex Taipei 2014 to be held from June 3-7, but the information has not been confirmed by Microsoft. Initially, Microsoft will target the 8.5-inch and below segment in the smartphone and tablet markets since the boundaries of the two sectors have become blurred and the impact on the software vendor will be less significant given Microsoft’s limited market share in the segment, said the sources. Bing Introduces New Timeline Feature, Helps Us Understand Important Events In People’s Lives

Microsoft Bing team today announced a new feature called Timeline that will appear to the right of the search results page along with other Snapshot contents. This new feature called “Timeline” allows you to know the important events in the timeline of influential or famous people’s lives. In the case of Henry Ford, we highlight several events of Henry’s life including his marriage and early career of farming and running a saw-mill in 1888, incorporating the Ford Motor Company in 1903, and his retirement from the company in 1918. Another timely example of this can be found around Olympic athletes. In the case of Ashley Wagner, who is skating in the Sochi games, a simple search of her name yields a chronology of her career leading to this year’s Olympics. So far, Bing has indexed and generated timelines for about half of a million famous people and is adding more to the list. Microsoft is also looking to add timelines for people in like actors and singers, their movies and…

‘Windows 8.1 With Bing’ Build Leaks, Another New SKU From Microsoft?

In the past few weeks, we saw no.of Windows 8.1 Update 1 builds leaked on the web. Today, a new Windows 8.1 Update 1 build got leaked which seems to be a new SKU from Microsoft. This Windows 8.1 build: 9600.17024.winblue_gdr_s14sku_partner.140214-1700 is named Windows 8.1 with Bing. With Windows 8.1, Microsoft has started integrating Bing directly into the OS which might raise anti-trust issues in EU. My guess is that this new SKU is targeted towards EU where Microsoft might be selling Windows 8.1 with Bing instead of just Windows 8.1 branding. Microsoft has not yet officially confirmed this new offering, we will have to wait and see to know more about it. Bloomberg today reported that Microsoft is cutting the price of Windows 8.1 OS license to OEMs by 70% for low-cost PCs and tablets. This new discount program is one of the main effort Microsoft is taking to rival the adoption of Google’s Chromebooks and Android devices. Windows 8.1 license generally costs $50 for OEMs, but Microsoft pays them marketing incentives every year which would bring the effective Windows 8.1 license cost around $30-$40. According to this new report, OEMs will be charged $15 to license Windows 8.1 and preinstall it on devices that retail for less than $250. This new pricing scheme will apply only for the products that meet the price limit, with no restrictions on the size or type of device. Microsoft, which named Satya Nadella as CEO earlier this month, is seeking to speed up development and introduction of new devices. It won’t require products that use the cheaper licensing to complete logo certification, a process that verifies hardware compatibility, one of the people said. Devices aren’t required to be touch-screen compatible, they said….
